Job Description Summary

The purpose of this position is to write original material and serve as the key copyeditor who supports functions of the College Relations Office (CRO) to promote a positive image of the College primarily to external audiences through informational, promotional and advertising efforts. This role is accomplished by researching and writing specified news releases and promotional copy and serving as editor and proofreader for College print and web publications. The individual also assists the Associate Director of Media Relations by producing reports using news media tracking services to inform key audiences of coverage produced by CRO staff, along with social media postings by and about the institution. The position reviews and provides suggested page edits, such as updates or corrections, throughout the DMC website. Other duties include assisting with additional duties assigned as part of various CRO projects. The position also provides primary monitoring and recommends applications for utilizing radio communications to promote the College image.

Gathers campus information regarding special or departmental events to produce the Weekly Calendar release featuring fine arts activities, festivals and other events open to the campus and general community; ensures accurate and complete information is disseminated to appropriate media outlets weekly; and posts events on Del Mar College, Caller-Times and other useful online calendars. Provides first-level research, writing and dissemination of student and employee recognition and board accolades events.

Produces and disseminates weekly news coverage reports using contracted media tracking services, including specific reports to top-level College officials, such as the College’s Executive Team, Organizational Chart members and Board of Regents, featuring prominent stories about the institution at the local, regional, state and national levels, and more comprehensive report(s) produced for CRO archival purposes encompassing all coverage produced by CRO staff efforts or stories mentioning the institution but generated by outside sources. Other reports on specific topics or time frames may also be required.

Conducts detailed review of at least five web pages on the Del Mar College website per week and provides editing and/or correction reports to the CRO Publications and Web Marketing Specialist for updates. Assists in producing and/or ensuring accuracy of other web-based projects such as mobile applications.

Assists Associate Director of Media Relations as assigned with media relations, news service publications, advertising, governmental relations, marketing efforts, and special events and promotions by aiding with producing media packets for special events; assisting with delivery of promotional packets; and assisting with news conferences and facilitating media usage of College materials. Also assists with other office operational duties as assigned.
