Job Description Summary

The purpose of this position is to support news services and marketing function of the Office of College Relations to promote a positive image of the College. This is accomplished by directing news services; conducting media buying for television advertising; and assisting with marketing efforts. Other duties include maintaining College Relations’ Web pages for events and news releases; maintains the College’s calendar and news release pages of the College’s and appropriate commercial Web sites, writing remarks and speeches for President when requested; approving requisitions for office purchases under $5,000; producing small publication projects when assignments dictate; and recommending, conducting and analyzing market research.

Direct news services by serving as primary news writer and media relations contact for local, state, and national media representatives; conduct research and compile verifiable information for use in College Relations external communications effort; oversee staff writer/editor positions and campus photographer position and assign stories to individual responding to media requests generated by news release dissemination as well as to requests for stories originating with media; arrange on-air interviews with local television media during specific broadcast times to promote special events or programs; monitor regional and national news issues and trends affecting higher education in general, and community colleges in particular; and share knowledge with appropriate college personnel; organize and execute news conferences or special media events that emphasize the College’s programs, students, and employees; and assist with crisis management with regard to media and College campus audience by putting out directed media alerts, updates, and information regarding the crisis at hand, decisions made by top college administrators, and actions that faculty, staff, and students should take.

Oversee expanded News Services activity, including internal/external on-line postings on Web sites (YouTube, flickr, MySpace, Twitter, DMCtube, Wickipedia, and other social networking sits as appropriate), videography program (DMCtube and other postings), and support photography for news/promotions/DMC publications; lead targeted internal notification through MyDMC, homepage FOCUS BOX and notices through Emergency/Event Notification System.

Conduct media buying for television advertising, producing budget allocation schedule for each registration period using budget provided by college for entire year; oversee Request for Proposals process with Purchasing for development/production of tv/radio spots and budgets/places electronic (TV) advertising; develop office’s advertising schedule/calendar to ensure all efforts coincide and work together to provide the best coverage among media promoting registration; allocate funds during buys with local television stations and cable company by reviewing station ratings, market research data covering students media use, and costs for airtime; produce insertion orders requesting advertising flight from representatives, and finalize contract procedures upon acceptance of schedules; and provide Office Manager with breakdown of budget allocation, advertising spots and public service announcements, and original paperwork to process requisitions for accepted schedules and contracts.

Assist with marketing efforts by developing survey instruments and coordinating student survey and focus group efforts for on-campus target audience and media use research and data analyses; coordinate with local television stations’ consumer survey efforts and develop questions specific to College when additional research contracted; produce executive summaries for administration review using data generated by market research efforts; write scripting for departmental radio spots when necessary and copy for print publications; coordinate with advertising agencies production of the College’s television and radio spots; recruit College’s students for inclusion; encourage and arrange for departmental participation; assist with identifying locations and props for shoots, and schedule and keep production efforts running on time during actual shooting/recording of spots on campus.
