Job Description Summary

This position will produce original material in written and video formats to support the brand and marketing functions of the College Relations Office (CRO). CRO is responsible for promoting a positive image of Del Mar College, primarily to external audiences. Position will plan, produce and coordinate the College’s social media applications and keep the College current with technology innovations. Social media platforms currently involve Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. and will evolve as technology evolves. Position requires capability of shooting, editing and posting videography and other social media content concerning complex topics on tight deadlines.

Position will also research, write and publicize original materials for College including but not limited to news releases, recruitment publications, media advisories, web site copy and scripts for audio and video productions. Position will also assist with initiatives such as media events and advertising campaigns.

Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Demonstrated ability to produce promotional copy for web and print publications, content for commercial social media sites. Demonstrated knowledge/expertise in reporting, writing and editing for print publications ad well as video production. Must be detail-oriented and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills with talent and ability to create and post online content.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, photo-journalism, multimedia communications, video technology, or closely-related field.

Three years applicable experience in planning and producing social media content on numerous platforms for a professional (not personal) business or institution.

Successful candidate will need to demonstrate capability of shooting, editing and posting videography and other social media content concerning complex topics on tight deadlines, as well as writing news releases, feature stories, technical documents, promotional copy for web and print publications, and other writing assignments.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of Associated Press style news writing.

Five years experience writing news releases, feature stories, technical documents, and promotional copy for web and print publications.

Job Duty

Coordinates video planning and production to supply primarily the College’s social media sites with accurate, relevant content in support of all aspects of the College Relations functions. Coordinates efforts with News Services and TV production staff to maximize the use of each video message produced and eliminate redundancy of video production. Researches best practices for developing and producing video content that can be used across all relevant platforms and resolves technical and format issues for enabling that use.

Also researching and recommending new and emerging social platforms and similar media tools to maximize College resources.

Researches and writes specific news releases related to College events open to the community, promotional pieces, and advertising copy by researching appropriate background material; interviewing individuals, as needed, for additional information; cross-checking material provided against background information provided; maintaining relations with local media to promote events; and responding to media representatives’ inquiries by providing information and sources.

Monitors current and emerging technical and audience-use trends in social media to ensure the College remains relevant and accessible to current and future students, employees and the public. Conducts appropriate research to prepare the College to stay current in this medium. Utilizes content management system, asset management system and other College tools to maximum effect. Assists with other College Relations projects and assignments as appropriate.

Assists Associate Director of Media Relations as assigned with media relations, news service publications, advertising, governmental relations, marketing efforts, and special events and promotions by aiding with producing media packets for special events; assisting with delivery of promotional packets; and assisting with news conferences and facilitating media usage of College materials. Also assists with other office operational duties as assigned.
